What is Launch Control?

Launch control is an ECU function that manages engine RPM and torque delivery during a standing start to achieve the fastest possible acceleration. The system holds the engine at a predetermined RPM while the driver has the brake and throttle pressed simultaneously. When the brake is released, the ECU delivers maximum torque to the wheels in a controlled manner, minimizing wheelspin and maximizing traction off the line.

Many high-performance vehicles come with factory launch control, but it is often limited to specific drive modes, requires complex activation sequences, or is absent entirely on lower-spec models that share the same engine hardware. Our launch control calibration enables or enhances this function directly in the ECU software.

How It Works

• Launch RPM limiter — a secondary rev limiter is activated when brake and throttle are pressed simultaneously, holding the engine at the optimal launch RPM
• Ignition retard at launch RPM — controlled ignition timing retard at the limiter builds boost pressure on turbocharged engines while preventing the RPM from climbing
• Torque management on launch — progressive torque delivery when the brake is released to maximize traction
• Configurable launch RPM — the launch RPM can be set to match your vehicle setup and tire grip level

Activation Method

The typical activation sequence after calibration:

1. Vehicle stationary, transmission in first gear (manual) or Drive (automatic/DCT)
2. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
3. Press the throttle to full — the engine will hold at the launch RPM
4. Release the brake — the vehicle launches with maximum controlled acceleration

• Continental: MSD80, MSD81, MSD85, MSD87, Simos 12, Simos 18

Launch control is available for turbocharged petrol engines. Naturally aspirated engines can also benefit, though the effect is less dramatic without boost buildup at the limiter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will launch control damage my drivetrain?

Repeated hard launches put stress on the clutch, gearbox, and drivetrain. This is inherent to the function, not a defect of the calibration. Use responsibly and ensure your drivetrain is in good condition.

Does it work with automatic transmissions?

Yes. Launch control works with manual, automatic, and DCT/DSG transmissions. The activation method may vary slightly depending on the transmission type.

Can I set the launch RPM?

Yes. We can configure the launch RPM to your preference. Higher RPM = more aggressive launch but more wheelspin risk. We recommend starting conservative and adjusting based on your tire grip.
