What is Torque Monitoring?

Torque monitoring is an ECU safety function that continuously compares the actual engine torque output against the expected (modeled) torque. The ECU calculates expected torque based on throttle position, boost pressure, airflow, ignition timing, and other parameters. If the actual torque exceeds the modeled value by more than a defined threshold, the ECU assumes a malfunction and activates a torque reduction intervention — commonly experienced as sudden power loss or limp mode.

On stock vehicles, this system works as intended. But after a performance remap — especially Stage 2 or higher — the increased boost pressure and modified fueling maps cause the actual torque to exceed the factory torque model. The ECU interprets this as an error and intervenes, cutting power at the worst possible moment: during hard acceleration.

Why Torque Monitoring Disable is Needed

This service is particularly important on:

  • Bosch MED17 / MEVD17 platforms — BMW N20, N55, B48, B58 and VAG EA888 engines with advanced torque model supervision
  • Bosch MG1 / MD1 platforms — newer BMW B-series and Mercedes M-series engines
  • Continental MSD80/81/85/87 — BMW N54, N55 with torque monitoring active
  • Any ECU with active torque model comparison after a remap that significantly increases output

If you experience intermittent power cuts, sudden boost drops, or limp mode events after a remap — especially under hard acceleration or at high RPM — torque monitoring intervention is the most likely cause.

How It Works

  • Torque comparison thresholds raised — the allowable deviation between modeled and actual torque is increased to accommodate the higher output
  • Torque intervention disabled — the power reduction response is deactivated so the ECU does not cut power when the threshold is exceeded
  • Torque model maps updated — where possible, the internal torque model is recalibrated to match the new power output
  • Related DTCs suppressed — torque plausibility fault codes are disabled

Supported ECU Platforms

  • Bosch: MED17, MEVD17, MG1CS, MD1CP (BMW, VAG, Mercedes)
  • Continental: MSD80, MSD81, MSD85, MSD87 (BMW N54, N55)
  • Continental: Simos 12, Simos 18 (VAG EA888)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is torque monitoring disable safe?

When combined with a properly calibrated remap, yes. The torque monitoring system is a software plausibility check, not a mechanical safety system. Disabling it does not affect physical engine protection systems like knock control, boost pressure limits, or exhaust gas temperature monitoring.

Do I need this with a Stage 1 remap?

Usually not. Most Stage 1 remaps stay within the factory torque model tolerance. Torque monitoring disable is typically needed for Stage 2 and above, or for aggressive Stage 1 calibrations on sensitive platforms.

Can it be included in my remap file?

Yes. Torque monitoring disable can be combined with any remap level in a single file modification.
