AdBlue System Removal: Is It Worth It?
AdBlue (SCR) is one of the most expensive and problematic parts of a diesel car. If your vehicle shows "AdBlue level" errors, won't start, or constantly demands AdBlue fluid top-ups – this article is for you.
What is AdBlue?
AdBlue is a urea solution (32.5% urea, 67.5% deionized water) injected into the exhaust system. It reacts with NOx emissions in the SCR catalytic converter, converting them into harmless nitrogen and water.
Common AdBlue problems
AdBlue consumption
BMW uses 1–2 litres per 1,000 km. The tank must be refilled regularly. When AdBlue runs out, the car starts a countdown and eventually won't start.
Crystallization
AdBlue can crystallize at the injector nozzle and supply lines, especially in cold weather. This blocks the system and triggers errors.
Heating element failure
The AdBlue tank contains a heating element that prevents the fluid from freezing. When it fails – the system doesn't work in winter. Replacement costs €500–€1,000.
NOx sensor failure
Sensors that monitor AdBlue efficiency are expensive (€300–€600 each) and prone to failure.
SCR catalytic converter wear
Over time, the catalytic converter loses efficiency, triggering "AdBlue quality" warnings even with fresh fluid.
Repair vs deprogramming
Repair
Depending on the fault, repair can cost:
- NOx sensor: €300–€600
- AdBlue injector: €400–€800
- Heating element: €500–€1,000
- SCR catalytic converter: €1,500–€3,000
And even after repair, the problem can recur.
AdBlue deprogramming (TempaDrive)
We software-disable the entire AdBlue/SCR system in the ECU. Result:
- No more AdBlue refills – zero running costs
- No more heating issues – no worries in winter
- No more sensor errors – no check engine lights
- Car always starts – no countdown timers
Process and price
AdBlue deprogramming at TempaDrive in Vilnius: from €200. The process takes 2–3 hours. We provide a warranty.
Which cars?
All Euro 6 diesel cars with AdBlue system: BMW (B47, B57), Mercedes, Audi, VW, Volvo, Peugeot, Renault, etc.
