Pops and Bangs Programming: How It Works

Pops and Bangs (also called "popcorn" or "crackle map") is ECU programming that creates popping and crackling sounds from the exhaust system when you release the accelerator pedal. It's the sound you hear from sports cars – and now you can have it on your BMW.

How does it work?

Normally, when you release the accelerator, the ECU cuts fuel delivery. The Pops and Bangs program changes this behaviour – the ECU continues fuel injection and retards ignition timing, so unburned fuel enters the hot exhaust system and ignites there.

Is it safe?

Professionally programmed Pops and Bangs is safe. We use conservative parameters that don't cause excessive stress on the exhaust system. However:

  • A sport exhaust or at least a downpipe without a catalytic converter is recommended
  • With a factory catalytic converter, the sound will be quieter
  • Very aggressive settings can shorten catalytic converter/turbo lifespan

Which cars?

Works best with turbocharged petrol engines: BMW (N54, N55, S55, B58, S58), Audi/VW (EA888), Mercedes (M133, M139). Also possible for diesels, but the effect is less pronounced.
