What is Pops and Bangs?

Pops and Bangs — also known as crackle map, burble tune, overrun crackle, or popcorn map — is a professional ECU calibration that produces controlled exhaust crackles, pops, and bangs when you lift off the throttle or during gear shifts. This is achieved by modifying the fuel cut-off strategy and ignition timing during deceleration, allowing unburned fuel to ignite in the hot exhaust manifold and catalytic converter, creating the distinctive crackling sound associated with high-performance and motorsport vehicles.

Originally a byproduct of aggressive motorsport calibrations, Pops and Bangs has become one of the most popular aftermarket ECU modifications for enthusiasts who want their car to sound as exciting as it drives. How Pops and Bangs Works

The modification involves several interconnected ECU calibration changes:

  • Fuel cut-off delay/removal on overrun — instead of immediately cutting fuel when you lift off the throttle, the ECU continues injecting a controlled amount of fuel during deceleration
  • Ignition timing retard on overrun — the spark timing is significantly retarded during deceleration, causing the air-fuel mixture to ignite later in the combustion cycle or in the exhaust manifold
  • Secondary air injection strategy — on vehicles equipped with secondary air pumps, the additional air in the exhaust amplifies the combustion effect
  • Rev limiter modification — the fuel cut at the rev limiter can be replaced with an ignition cut, producing dramatic bangs at the limiter
  • Gear shift crackle — on automatic and DCT transmissions, crackles can be calibrated to occur during upshifts for a motorsport-like experience
