BMW Region Change: Everything You Need to Know About Converting Imported Cars

Buying a BMW from another country can save you thousands. But once it arrives, you'll likely discover that the software thinks it's still in its home market. Navigation shows the wrong region, language options are limited, radio frequencies don't match, and some features may be disabled entirely.

This is where a region change comes in – converting your BMW's software from one market to another.

Why Do Imported BMWs Need a Region Change?

BMW configures each vehicle for a specific market at the factory. This affects:

  • Navigation region – Maps are locked to the original market (US, Korea, Japan, Middle East, etc.)
  • Language options – Only languages relevant to the original market are available
  • Radio frequencies – FM/AM bands differ between regions (US uses different FM spacing than Europe)
  • Speed warnings – Some markets have mandatory speed limit warnings or restrictions
  • Emergency call (eCall) – Configured for the original country's emergency services
  • DAB+ radio – May be disabled on non-European vehicles
  • Connected services – BMW ConnectedDrive/Connected Package may not work in the wrong region
  • Instrument cluster – Units (mph/kmh), date format, temperature display

Common Import Scenarios

USA/Canada → Europe

The most common scenario. US-spec BMWs have different radio frequencies, navigation locked to North America, amber sidemarker lights, and different emission calibrations. A full region change converts everything to European spec.

Korea/Japan → Europe

Korean and Japanese market BMWs often have unique infotainment configurations and language restrictions that need conversion.

Middle East → Europe

Gulf-spec BMWs may have different climate control calibrations, navigation regions, and feature sets.

Europe → Europe (different country)

Even within Europe, some features differ between markets. A UK-spec BMW imported to Germany may need language, radio, and navigation adjustments.

What Gets Changed During a Region Conversion?

1. Vehicle Order (FA/VO) Modification

The FA (Fahrzeugausstattung) is updated to reflect the new market. This is the foundation – all other changes depend on the correct FA. We can pull your current FA by VIN →

2. Headunit Region Change

The navigation system is reconfigured for the new region. This includes map region, language pack, radio frequencies, and connected services configuration.

3. Module Coding

Individual modules (BDC, FEM, instrument cluster, headunit) are recoded to match the new market specifications.

4. NCD Generation (G-series)

On newer G-series BMWs with secure coding, new NCD files must be generated from the modified FA. NCD generation service →

Region Change by Headunit Type

NBT / NBT EVO

F-series BMWs with NBT or NBT EVO headunits. Region change involves headunit recoding and FA modification. Relatively straightforward.

NBT/NBT EVO Region Change →

EntryNav2 (BMW, MINI)

Budget navigation systems in entry-level models.

EntryNav2 Region Change →

MGU (iDrive 7-8)

G-series BMWs with iDrive 7 and 8. More complex due to secure coding – requires NCD generation and potentially SFA/token work.

iDrive 7-8 Region Change →

MGU2 (iDrive 8.5-9)

Latest generation. Most complex region change due to NCD 3.0 secure coding.

iDrive 8.5-9 Region Change →

US Import Special: Amber Sidemarker Lights

US-spec BMWs have amber sidemarker lights in the front bumper that are required by US DOT regulations but look out of place in Europe. These can be disabled through coding so they no longer illuminate.

Sidemarker lights delete →

Can It Be Done Remotely?

Yes – the entire region change process can be done remotely. You connect your BMW to a laptop via ENET cable, and our technician handles everything via remote desktop. Depending on the complexity:

  • Simple region change (NBT/EVO): 1-2 hours
  • Full conversion (MGU with NCD): 2-4 hours
  • Complete US→EU conversion: 3-5 hours (includes all modules, sidemarkers, etc.)

What You Need

  • Laptop (Windows) with stable internet
  • ENET cable (~€20)
  • Car battery charged or on charger
  • 2-5 hours depending on scope

Pricing

Region change pricing depends on the headunit type and scope of work. Contact us with your VIN for an exact quote. We'll check your current configuration and advise on what's needed.

Conclusion

A region change is essential for any imported BMW to function properly in its new market. It's not just about navigation – it affects radio, connected services, language options, and even safety features like eCall. Done remotely, it's a straightforward process that transforms your import into a fully localized vehicle.
