BMW Engine Tuning Guide: N54, N55, B58 and S55
How much power your BMW will safely make from a remap depends almost entirely on which engine is under the bonnet. An N54 responds very differently from a B58, and an S55 lives in a different world again. This guide gives realistic, honest figures for the four engines people ask about most — N54, N55, B58 and S55 — plus where each one's limits are, what supporting mods actually matter, and how we tune them remotely.

Why the engine decides everything
Two BMWs with the same "Stage 1" label can gain wildly different amounts because the turbo, fuel system, and factory tune headroom differ per engine. A single small turbo runs out of breath early; a bigger or twin setup keeps pulling. So the useful question is never "how much does Stage 1 add?" but "how much does Stage 1 add on this engine, on the fuel I run, with the hardware I have?" The figures below assume a healthy engine, good fuel, and stock supporting hardware unless noted.
N54 — the twin-turbo legend (335i, 135i, 535i, Z4 35i)
BMW's first mass-market twin-turbo petrol, the N54, is a tuner favourite for one reason: it responds enormously to software because the factory left a lot on the table and the twin-turbo setup has real airflow headroom.
- Stock: ~306 hp
- Stage 1 (software only, 98/99 RON): ~350–380 hp and a big torque jump
- Known weak points: the factory wastegates rattle with age (a mechanical issue, not tuning-related), the walnut intake carbons up, and the fuel system's high-pressure pump (HPFP) history is worth knowing. None of these are caused by a sensible remap, but tuning a tired N54 exposes them.
The N54 also loves supporting mods more than most: an upgraded intercooler, a catless or high-flow downpipe and better fuelling unlock much more on higher stages. But even pure Stage 1 is one of the most rewarding remaps in the BMW range.
N55 — the single-turbo workhorse (335i, 435i, M2, X3/X4 35i)
The N55 replaced the N54 with a single twin-scroll turbo. It's smoother, more reliable in some respects, but the single turbo means it doesn't have quite the same software-only ceiling as the N54.
- Stock: ~306 hp (higher in the M2's variant)
- Stage 1 (98/99 RON): ~340–370 hp with a strong mid-range torque gain
- Known weak points: the single turbo is the airflow limit — Stage 1 gets most of what software can safely give, and bigger numbers need hardware (downpipe, intercooler, and eventually a turbo upgrade).
For most N55 owners, Stage 1 is the sweet spot: a noticeable, reliable step up that transforms the mid-range without stressing the single turbo.
B58 — the modern powerhouse (340i, 440i, M340i, Z4 M40i, Supra)
The B58 is the engine that made "just a Stage 1" genuinely fast. It's strong from the factory, has excellent fuelling, and the modular architecture takes software beautifully — this is the current value king of BMW tuning.
- Stock: ~322–382 hp depending on variant and year
- Stage 1 (98/99 RON): ~400–450 hp with a large torque increase, on stock hardware
- Known strengths: the bottom end and fuelling are robust; the gearbox (ZF8) is strong; the main thing to respect is heat management on sustained hard use.
Later B58 (gen 2, sometimes called B58TU) uses a newer ECU generation, which affects how it's read and written — worth confirming when you tune. But across the board, a B58 Stage 1 delivers the biggest "wow" per euro of any current BMW petrol engine.
S55 — the M car engine (F80 M3, F82/F83 M4, F87 M2 Competition)
The S55 is the M-division twin-turbo derived from the B-series/N-series lineage, already making serious power from the factory — so the percentages are smaller, but the absolute numbers are big.
- Stock: ~431–460 hp
- Stage 1 (98/99 RON): ~500–520 hp with a healthy torque gain
- Known considerations: the S55 is more sensitive to fuel quality and heat, so a conservative, well-logged tune matters more here than on a lower-stressed engine. Supporting mods (downpipes, intake, cooling) unlock the bigger figures at higher stages.
On an S55, calibration quality and data logging are everything — a lazy "max power" file on an already-hard-working engine is exactly where reliability problems start. Done properly, Stage 1 makes an already-fast M car properly quick.

What about the other engines?
The four above dominate the questions, but the same logic applies across the range:
- N20 / B48 (4-cylinder turbo petrol) — respond well to Stage 1 (typically a strong 40–70 hp gain), great value on 320i/330i/430i and similar.
- N57 / B57 (straight-six diesel) — big low-down torque gains and often better cruise economy; diesels are the torque champions of Stage 1.
- B47 (4-cylinder diesel) — a solid, sensible torque bump on 320d/520d.
- S58 (G80 M3/M4) — the newest M engine, huge potential, newest ECU generation.
Whatever the engine, the approach is the same: calibrate for the exact engine, gearbox and fuel, and log to confirm it's safe.
Supporting mods: what actually matters
For Stage 1 you need nothing but a healthy car and good fuel. If you go further, the mods that genuinely help (roughly in order) are:
- Downpipe(s) — the biggest single enabler beyond Stage 1, letting the turbo breathe out.
- Intercooler — keeps intake temps down on sustained hard use, protecting timing.
- Intake — helps once other restrictions are gone.
- Fuelling — becomes the limit on the highest stages.
Chasing power without the supporting hardware just removes safety margin, which is how engines get hurt. A good tuner tells you what your current hardware can safely carry — and stops there.
Don't forget the gearbox
On higher-torque tunes, the automatic (ZF8) or DCT benefits from a matching transmission tune so shift pressure keeps up with the extra torque — otherwise you can get slip or harsh shifts. Where each engine goes beyond Stage 1
If Stage 1 leaves you wanting more, here's the realistic next step per engine — always with the right supporting hardware and logging, never on software alone:
- N54: loves Stage 2+ with downpipes and fuelling; the twin-turbo layout keeps rewarding upgrades further than most.
- N55: Stage 2 with a downpipe helps, but the single stock turbo is the real ceiling — big numbers mean a turbo upgrade.
- B58: huge Stage 2 potential on downpipe + intercooler + high-octane or ethanol blends; one of the strongest platforms out there.
- S55: downpipes, cooling and fuelling unlock serious figures, but heat and fuel management must be respected at every step.
The golden rule holds across all of them: hardware first, then software to match — not the other way around.
Frequently asked questions
Which BMW engine gains the most from Stage 1?
In percentage and "feel," the N54 and B58 are the standouts — the N54 because BMW left so much on the table, the B58 because it's strong and efficient. Diesels gain huge torque. Single-turbo N55 gains are solid but turbo-limited on software alone.
Is Stage 1 safe on these engines?
On a healthy engine with good fuel and a conservative, logged tune, yes. The risks come from unhealthy starting condition, over-aggressive files, or the wrong fuel — see the reliability section in the Stage 1 guide.
Do I need a downpipe for Stage 1?
No. Stage 1 is designed for stock hardware. A downpipe is a Stage 2 enabler, not a Stage 1 requirement.
What fuel should I run after tuning a petrol engine?
98/99 RON to match the file. Running lower octane removes the safety margin the tuner built in and can cause the ECU to pull timing.
Can you tune the newer B58 and S58 (gen-2 ECUs)?
Yes — the newer engines use a newer ECU generation that's read and written differently, which we handle. Tell us the exact model and year and we'll confirm the method for your car.
Will a remap affect my gearbox?
The ZF8 and DCT are strong, but higher-torque tunes benefit from a matching gearbox tune so shifts keep up. We'll advise based on your power level rather than selling it automatically.
