What is Speed Limiter Removal?

Speed limiter removal (also known as VMAX off or top speed limiter delete) is an ECU calibration that disables the factory-imposed electronic speed restriction. Most European vehicles are electronically limited to 250 km/h as part of a voluntary agreement between manufacturers. Some models have lower limits — 180, 190, or 210 km/h — based on tire ratings, market regulations, or product positioning.

The speed limiter works by cutting fuel injection or ignition when the vehicle reaches the programmed maximum speed. This is purely a software restriction — the engine, transmission, and chassis are typically capable of significantly higher speeds. Removing the limiter allows the vehicle to reach its natural top speed, determined by aerodynamics, gearing, and available power.

How It Works

  • Speed limiter threshold raised or removed — the maximum speed value in the ECU is set to the maximum possible value or removed entirely
  • Fuel cut at speed limit disabled — the ECU no longer cuts fuel injection at the speed threshold
  • Torque reduction at speed limit removed — on some platforms, the ECU gradually reduces torque as the speed limit approaches; this is disabled
  • Speedometer calibration preserved — the speedometer continues to read accurately

Common Applications

  • German autobahn driving — unrestricted sections allow speeds above 250 km/h
  • Track day vehicles — removing the limiter allows full performance on circuit
  • Imported vehicles — some markets have lower speed limits (e.g., 180 km/h for Middle East or Asian market vehicles)
  • Commercial vehicles — some vans and light trucks have 120-160 km/h limiters that can be raised

Supported ECU Platforms

  • Bosch: ME7, MED9, MED17, MEVD17, EDC17, MD1, MG1
  • Continental: Simos, MSD80-87, EMS
  • Delphi: DCM series
  • Denso: SH series

Important Safety Note

Speed limiter removal is intended for use on closed circuits, private roads, or unrestricted highways where local laws permit. Always ensure your tires, brakes, and suspension are rated for the speeds you intend to reach. TempaDrive is not responsible for the use of this modification on public roads where speed limits apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it affect my speedometer?

No. The speedometer calibration is not modified. It will continue to display accurate speed readings.

Can this be combined with a remap?

Yes. Speed limiter removal is commonly included as a free add-on with Stage 1 or Stage 2 remaps. Just mention it when ordering your remap file.

What about tire ratings?

Ensure your tires are rated for the speeds you plan to reach. Most performance tires are rated for 240-300+ km/h, but economy tires may have lower ratings.
