What a BMW Map Update Actually Changes Across CIC, NBT, NBT EVO, and MGU

A BMW map update isn't just adding new roads. This guide explains what's actually inside a map update package, how the release cycle works, and what changes on each iDrive generation.

What's Inside a BMW Map Update

  • Road network changes — new roads, reclassified roads, road closures permanently applied
  • Speed limit data — updated speed limit information for speed limit assist and display
  • Points of Interest (POIs) — new businesses, updated locations, removed closed businesses
  • Routing improvements — better routing algorithms based on real-world usage data
  • 3D landmarks and city models — updated building outlines in major cities

Release Cycle

BMW releases maps twice yearly: a "1" release (early year) and a "2" release (mid-year). Each release covers a specific region. The current cycle for Europe is 2025-2 and 2026-1.

Does a Map Update Change Anything Else?

On CIC, NBT and NBT EVO — only map data. On MGU with Connected Package active — map data plus live traffic layer updates. iDrive software updates (for UI changes, bug fixes) are separate from map data updates.
