Modern forced-induction petrol engines are heavily detuned from the factory to meet global emissions standards, accommodate varying fuel qualities across markets, and create product differentiation between model variants.
The same physical engine often appears in multiple power levels across a manufacturer lineup. A 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder might produce 180 HP in one model and 250 HP in another — using identical hardware. The difference is purely in the ECU calibration: boost pressure targets, ignition timing, fuel injection strategy, and torque limiter settings. A Stage 1 remap optimizes these parameters to unlock the performance the hardware already supports.
