Video in Motion (VIM) lets the BMW screen keep playing video and stay in menus that the car normally locks the moment you start rolling. It is one of the most requested coding jobs, especially on cars with rear-seat passengers or a front passenger who wants the screen usable on the move. This guide explains exactly what VIM does, which BMWs support it, whether it's safe and legal, and how it's activated remotely without a workshop visit.

What Video in Motion actually does

By default, BMW disables video playback and certain interactive screen functions once the car is moving above walking pace. It's a safety lockout: the DVD/USB/streaming video freezes or shows "not available while driving," and some menus become greyed out. Video in Motion coding removes that speed lock so the screen continues to show video and stays fully usable while the car is in motion.

Depending on the car and what you ask for, VIM coding can cover:

  • Video playback while driving — USB video, media players, and (on supported units) mirrored/streamed sources.

Which BMWs support Video in Motion?

VIM is available across the modern iDrive generations — CIC, NBT, NBT EVO and MGU — though the exact method and what can be unlocked differs by unit. This is the point where knowing your head unit matters: the coding path for a CIC car is not the same as for an MGU car, and newer systems use protected coding. How Video in Motion is activated

VIM is a coding change, not a hardware add-on. In practice we connect to the relevant head-unit / display module through the OBD port and change the parameters that enforce the speed lockout, so the screen no longer disables video and menus above a set speed. Nothing is plugged in permanently and nothing is physically modified.

  • Older units (CIC/NBT) — the lockout values are edited directly in the head unit's coding.
  • Newer units (NBT EVO/MGU) — the same outcome, but written through BMW's protected coding path (background: NCD secure coding explained), which is why a generic phone app is hit-or-miss on the latest cars.

Because it's a reversible coding change, your original configuration is backed up first and the car can be returned to standard whenever you like. It's the same kind of remote work as any other BMW coding done without a dealer visit.

Is Video in Motion safe and legal?

Two honest points here:

  • Safety: the lockout exists so the driver isn't watching video while driving. VIM is intended for passengers — a front passenger or rear-seat screens — not for the person behind the wheel. Used that way it changes nothing about how safely the car drives.
  • Legality: rules on the driver viewing moving video vary by country, and in many places a driver watching video while driving is an offence regardless of coding. Activating VIM is a coding change to your own car; using it responsibly (passenger entertainment, or navigation input while stopped) is on you. We enable the capability; how it's used is the owner's responsibility.

VIM does not touch anything mechanical or emissions-related — it only changes when the screen is allowed to show video, so it has no effect on how the car runs or on inspections.

Video in Motion and CarPlay together

A very common combination: activate Apple CarPlay and lift the motion lock so CarPlay video apps and screen functions stay usable for the passenger. On NBT EVO and MGU cars this pairing is popular because it turns the factory screen into a genuinely useful media surface on longer trips. Can it be done remotely?

Yes. VIM is one of the quick remote coding jobs: connect an OBD cable and a laptop, and we handle it over a screen-share in a few minutes — the car stays on your driveway. What VIM does not do

It's worth being clear so expectations match reality:

  • It doesn't add hardware. If your car has no rear screens, VIM won't create them — it unlocks the screens the car already has.
  • It doesn't add a video source. You still need something to play (USB media, a connected device, or CarPlay video apps). VIM removes the lock; it doesn't supply the content.
  • It doesn't change the driver-distraction law. The capability is unlocked, but where and by whom video may be viewed is still governed by local road rules.
  • It doesn't affect performance or emissions. It only changes when the screen is allowed to show video.

Video still stops when moving — what went wrong

If VIM was attempted but video still freezes above walking pace, it's usually one of these:

  • Only part of the coding was applied. Some units enforce the lock in more than one place; changing one value but not the other leaves the lock partly active.
  • Protected coding wasn't written correctly. On NBT EVO/MGU, if the change doesn't go through the secure path, the unit reverts at the next start — a classic sign a consumer app couldn't finish the job on a newer car.
  • Wrong unit assumption. Coding aimed at the wrong iDrive generation simply won't take. This is why we confirm the head unit by VIN first.

Since the car is already connected, VIM is frequently done together with:

  • Apple CarPlay — full-screen, on supported units.
