BMW Engine Tuning Guide: N54, N55, B58 and S55

How much power your BMW will safely make from a remap depends almost entirely on which engine is under the bonnet. This guide gives realistic, honest figures for the four engines people ask about most — N54, N55, B58 and S55 — plus where each one's limits are and how we tune them remotely.

N54 (135i, 335i, 535i, 1M)

The twin-turbocharged straight-six that started the modern BMW tuning era. Stage 1 delivers 350-380 hp and 550-600 Nm on a healthy engine — a 15% power increase and 25% torque increase over stock. The N54 responds strongly to software because it was detuned from the factory for longevity.

N55 (335i, 435i, M135i, X5 35i)

The N55 replaced the N54 with a single twin-scroll turbo. Stage 1 reaches 330-360 hp from the stock 306 hp — a 10% power gain. The N55 responds less aggressively than the N54 but still delivers meaningful improvements in throttle response and torque delivery.

B58 (340i, 440i, M340i, Z4 M40i)

BMW's current turbocharged inline-six. Stage 1 takes the B58 to 400-430 hp from 326-382 hp stock — gains of 15-25%. The B58 is one of the most responsive engines to software tuning among modern BMWs. Torque increases of 100-120 Nm are typical.

S55 (F80 M3, F82/F87 M4/M2 Competition)

The high-performance twin-turbocharged M engine. Stage 1 takes the S55 to 480-510 hp from 431-460 hp stock — 10-15% power gain. The S55 is already tuned close to its limits, so gains are more modest but still significant at high RPM.

N20/N26 and B48 (4-cylinder turbo petrol)

Stage 1 on the 4-cylinder turbo engines delivers 250-270 hp from 184-245 hp stock — 10-20% gains depending on the variant.

Diesel Engines (N47, N57, B47, B57)

Diesel Stage 1 delivers the best value-for-money in BMW tuning. Typical gains: 20-30% power, 30-40% torque, with improved fuel economy on steady-state driving.
