Importing a BMW from the US to Europe: The Full Conversion Checklist

A US-spec BMW is a great buy — often cheaper and better equipped than the European equivalent — but before it passes inspection and behaves normally on European roads, several things have to be changed. Most of them are coding and software jobs, done remotely, not parts. This guide walks through everything a US→EU import needs: rear fog lights, kilometres instead of miles, radio frequencies, European navigation, tyre-pressure monitoring, airbag differences and more — so you know exactly what you're dealing with before registration.

Why a US car needs converting at all

BMW builds cars to regional specifications. A US-market car is coded, calibrated and equipped for US roads and US regulations — different lighting rules, imperial units, US radio bands, US navigation data, and different safety hardware. None of that is "broken," but much of it doesn't meet European registration requirements or simply doesn't work here. Conversion brings the car in line with European spec so it passes inspection and works as a European car should.

Rear fog lights (this one is mandatory)

The single most important item for registration. The US does not require rear fog lights, so US-spec BMWs are typically not set up to run them — but in Europe a working rear fog light is a legal requirement and an inspection (TÜV/MOT-type) will fail the car without it. Converting means coding the lighting so the rear fog function works correctly. This is the item people most often discover at the inspection station, so it's the one to sort first. It's a coding job, part of the region change.

Miles to kilometres (the speedometer)

US clusters read in miles per hour. For European use — and to pass inspection in many countries — the car needs to display km/h. On modern BMWs this is a coding change to the instrument cluster so the speed, and often the trip and consumption data, read in metric. It's quick, but it has to be done correctly so the primary display is km/h (not just a small secondary readout), because inspectors check this.

Radio frequencies (US vs EU tuning steps)

US and European FM bands use different channel spacing — US radios step in different increments to European ones (the EU uses finer 0.05 MHz steps in places where the US steps differ), so a US-spec tuner often can't land exactly on European station frequencies and you get poor reception or stations you can't tune to at all. The fix is recoding the tuner to the European frequency raster so the radio tunes European stations properly. It's a small but genuinely annoying issue that catches out most imports.

European navigation (and the "empty map" problem)

Drive an imported US car in Europe and the navigation often shows a blank map — you're there on the screen, but there are no roads, no locations, and frequently no live position shown at all, because the car has US map data and is set to the US region. Converting means switching the navigation to the European region and loading European maps, which on most systems also needs the correct FSC activation code for your VIN. Tyre-pressure monitoring (TPMS vs ABS-based)

Here's a subtle one. US cars often use a direct TPMS system with a pressure sensor in each wheel, while many European BMWs measure pressure indirectly through the ABS/wheel-speed system (RDC/RPA). After an import — especially a car that was accident-damaged and had wheels replaced — the pressure-monitoring setup can be mismatched, and the wheels may not even have the sensors the car expects. Sorting this means coding the correct monitoring method for the car and, where needed, calibrating the indirect system so pressure warnings work properly rather than throwing permanent faults.

The airbag difference (US multi-stage vs EU)

One of the most misunderstood import issues. US-market cars often use a different airbag configuration to European cars — the US steering-wheel airbag is a multi-stage unit, while the European equivalent is set up differently. If a US car has had an airbag deployed and a European-spec airbag is fitted as a replacement, the car frequently throws an airbag/restraint fault because the control unit expects the US configuration. Resolving it means recoding the restraint system to match the fitted hardware so the warning clears and the system reads correctly. This is exactly the kind of import-specific fault that leaves owners chasing a light that no generic reset will clear.

Other items that come up

  • Daytime running lights and lighting behaviour — US and EU lighting logic differ; coding brings the car in line with European norms.
  • ConnectedDrive / online services — a US account and US services don't carry over; the car often needs re-provisioning for Europe, and features like RTTI may need activating (see Connected Package).
  • Language and units throughout the menus — set to European language and metric units.
  • Accident-import quirks — cars imported after damage (common with US salvage buys) can arrive with mismatched modules, missing sensors or leftover fault codes that all need sorting during the conversion.

Region Change vs Full Region Change

Two levels, depending on how much the car needs:

  • Region Change (Head Unit) — focuses on the infotainment side: switching the navigation region, European maps and the head-unit configuration. Right for a car that mainly needs the nav and media sorted.
  • Full Region Change — the complete US→EU conversion: rear fog coding, km/h cluster, radio frequencies, European navigation, TPMS handling, airbag recoding where needed, lighting and the rest — everything required to register and run the car as a European vehicle.

For most genuine imports heading for registration, the Full Region Change is what's needed, because the rear fog and units items alone are inspection-critical.

Can all of this be done remotely?

Yes — the vast majority of an import conversion is coding, and coding is done remotely. The right order to do it

  1. Inspection-critical first: rear fog lights and km/h — these decide whether the car passes registration.
  2. Drivability and safety: TPMS/pressure monitoring and any airbag/restraint faults.
  3. Everyday usability: European navigation + maps, radio frequencies, language and units.
  4. Nice-to-have: ConnectedDrive/online services and lighting preferences.

Doing it in this order means the car is registrable as early as possible, then fully usable.

Frequently asked questions

Will my imported US BMW pass European inspection without conversion?

Usually not. Rear fog lights and a km/h speedometer are the common fail points, and both are conversion items. Sorting them is what makes the car registrable.

Is US→EU conversion mostly parts or mostly coding?

Mostly coding. Rear fog, units, radio, navigation, TPMS method and airbag configuration are software/coding changes. Physical parts are only needed if the car is genuinely missing hardware (sometimes the case on salvage imports).

Why is my navigation map blank after importing?

The car has US map data and is set to the US region, so European roads and your position don't show. Switching to the European region and loading European maps (with the FSC code for your VIN) fixes it.

Why do I have an airbag warning after the import?

Often because a European-spec airbag was fitted to a car whose control unit expects the US multi-stage configuration. Recoding the restraint system to match the fitted hardware clears it.

Can you convert my car remotely, or does it need to come in?

How long does a full region change take?

Most of the conversion is done in a single remote session once the car is connected — usually well under a couple of hours, depending on how many modules need changing and whether the car arrived with import-related faults to clear. Inspection-critical items like rear fog and km/h are quick, so the car can be made registrable early even if you spread the rest out.
